When an air compressor works, it pulls in air from around the room. This air contains hidden moisture. Compressing the air makes it very hot, allowing the water to stay trapped as vapor.
When that hot compressed air travels through cooler pipes, the moisture condenses into liquid water. This water causes rust inside air lines, damages pneumatic tools, and can ruin paint jobs or finished products.
A refrigerated air dryer removes this moisture before it reaches your equipment, keeping your compressed air clean and dry.
What Does a Refrigerated Air Dryer Do?
A refrigerated air dryer cools compressed air until the water vapor turns into liquid droplets. These droplets are then separated and automatically drained from the system.
It works much like a household refrigerator or an air conditioner but is specially designed for compressed air systems. Most refrigerated dryers cool the air to approximately 3°C to 10°C (37°F to 50°F), where moisture can no longer remain suspended in the air.

Hot, moisture-filled compressed air enters the dryer and passes alongside the cold, dry air leaving the machine. This pre-cools the incoming air without using additional electricity.
The air then enters the refrigerant-cooling section, where its temperature quickly drops. As the air cools, the moisture changes from vapor into liquid water.
The condensed water passes into a moisture separator where it is collected and automatically discharged through a drain valve.
Before leaving the dryer, the cold dry air is slightly reheated. This helps prevent condensation (pipe sweating) on the outside of metal air lines.
